Hello Fish Fans, The fishing this past week was slower than expected with the Sailfish playin hide and seek and the dolphin on the small side. The weather was as good as it gets with calm seas and sunny skies but a nice day on the water is not a fishermans dream. I wasn’t on the water Thursday and Friday so the slow reports didn’t curtail my optimism,I always seem to find the fish and expected to be catching Sailfish and Dolphin as we have over the past 6 to 8 weeks. My clients had come down from South Carolina hopeing to spend the weekend catching Sailfish in the Sailfish Capital of the world. Saturday was the slowest day I can remember in recent weeks for all but a couple of private boats that managed to catch 3 Sailfish each less than a 1/2 mile away, we only managed to catch one small Dolphin and a couple of small sharks. Sunday I left the dock full of optimism because I knew it could only get better, I rarely have days like Saturday and it surely couldn’t happen 2 days in a row. Fishing to the north on Saturday didn’t pay off for us so we headed to the southeast to one of my favorite spots for Sailfish. Capt. VJ Bell on the charterboat Challenge who also bombed on Saturday did the same about 2 miles south of us. At about 10am there were a couple of sailfish caught up to the North and VJ hadn’t seen anything to the south either so we made a move. That’s when it went from bad to worse. Shortly before we got where I was going I blew a lower unit on 1 of the 2006 Yamaha 250 four strokes that power the Reel Busy. We were on a color change so we put the lines out, the conditions looked good with flying fish everywhere and frigit birds hovering above. Shortly after we set up VJ called me and told me he caught a Sailfish near where we had left, then called with another and shortly thereafter a double. The nice thing about having two high powered motors is that if one goes down we can travel at 20knts like most of the boats normally do so we picked up the lines and headed back south only to continue our frustration. There were a few more fish caught in the afternoon right there where we started out in the morning but the only luck we had was bad luck and we never got a shot. One of the most enjoyable things about running a boat like the Reel Busy is hooking people up with a fish they’ll always remember and there’s no worse feeling than not being able to get the job done no matter how hard you try. I know thats why they call it fishing but I sure hope I’m not forced to eat anymore humble pie for a while, I had a bellyfull this weekend. The Sailfish are here and there’s more to come so I’ll be back next week with another fishing report from Stuart Florida, Sailfish capital of the world. Catch you later, Captain Wayne, Reel Busy Charters 305-304-9049 cell
