The winds of March have kept us the dock a bit too much but we’ve had a good dolphin bite on most of our Stuart Florida Fishing Charters. There’s been an abundance of small school size dolphin so we’ve missed or released more than we’ve kept the last two weeks. We’ve brought home 5 or 6 dolphin from 5 to 15 pounds on all of our charters and the best is yet to come.
April and May are the top two months for dolphin fishing off the coast of Stuart Florida and double digit days are the norm. Big slammer dolphin of 20 to 40 pounds will start pushing through and there’s nothing more exciting than a 40 pound Bull Dolphin crashing the spread. Our biggest bull dolphin last spring was 50.4 pounds and 20 to 30 pound slammers we’re abundant from mid April through mid May.
The blackfin tuna are starting to show up and within the next couple of weeks they’ll be stacked up on a ridge just 10 miles off the beach. Most of these blackfin tuna will be 5 to 10 pounds and we always catch a few 15 to 25 pound blackfins during the springtime.
The yellowfin tuna will start showing up north of the Bahama Bank in April so now’s the time to schedule your dates for our Yellowfin Tuna Trip and Bahamas Fishing adventures. Most of the yellowfin tuna will vary from 35 to 75 pounds and 100 to 125 pounds is always a possibility. May, June and July are the top three months for our yellowfin tuna trip and our Bahamas Fishing Adventures.
The wahoo is the fastest fish in the ocean and the next few months is prime time especially around the full moons. The wahoo bite turns on and off and not as consistent a catch as a dolphin or tuna but always a nice bonus to a box full of dolphin and/or tuna.
There’s still not much bait around the reefs and wrecks so the kingfish and cobia bite’s been on the slow side. The bait is overdue and the kingfish and cobia bite should get fired up by our next fishing report.
The winter sailfish bite was disappointing again this year and if it plays out like last year we’ll have an excellent sailfish bite during the spring and summer months. The sailfish follow the bait down the coast so when it arrives you can expect a few sailfish to be hanging around.
