Hello Fish Fans, The fishing off the coast of Stuart, Florida this past week continued to be good with Blackfin Tuna and Sailfish providing most of the action. The Blackfin Tuna were not as plentiful as they’ve been the last few weeks but we managed to catch a dozen or so everyday this week except yesterday. The Tuna fishing on the hill generally starts slowing down this time of year but it always shuts down when the weekend warriors start racing around the hill in every direction like their ass is on fire. The Tuna fishing off the corner continues to be excellent for Yellowfin Tuna & Big Blackfin Tuna so if you’re looking for the big ones give me a call and we’ll hook you up. The Dolphin fishing continues to be hit & miss and small schooley dolphin but there’s a few 8 to 15lb Dolphin in the mix. The Sailfishing is starting to pick back up and the full moon this week usually gets them fired up. We spent the morning catching Blackfin Tuna a couple days ago and went looking for Sailfish & Dolphin after we piled up some filets. It’s always exciting when you get to watch a Sailfish go back & forth between the chuggers with it’s sail up while swatting at the chugger with it’s bill but it’s absolutely unforgetable for a first timer. At first it looks like a big black bag floating up behind the chugger and then the bill starts slicing up the water. It’s always a bit harder to hook a sailfish on a lure so as he went from chugger to chugger I popped a ballyhoo from the rigger and brought it up splashing in the middle of the spread. It took about 2 seconds to get him hooked up and it was showtime. The great thing about an open style boat is the angler can take the fight to the bow of the boat and enjoy the show. The Sailfish usually just keeps on running and jumping as we follow along but this one had something to prove. He decided to charge back towards the boat after screaning off about a 100 yards of line and he just kept on coming. There was no way to reel fast enough to get more preasure on the fish to force a turn until it was about 30′ from the boat. The Sailfish took to the air busting up the water and it looked like he was going to pass us by from left to right putting on a show but he didn’t. He made a wild jump about 20′ from the boat and when he landed he made a hard right turn and began tail-walking directly towards the bow of the boat. This crazy Sailfish stayed up on his tail and never hit the water again until after his chest hit the bow side rub-rail and he crashed into the boat. I’ve had Sailfish run into the boat over the years but never had one this close to coming aboard, it was an unbelieveable site and one I’m sure no will ever forget. This is a great time year for those who always wanted to catch a Sailfish but don’t want the sea conditions of the winter months. The seas conditions are picture perfect right now and it’s only 100 minutes to the Tuna grounds off the Bahama Bank so give me a call and let’s go catch’em.
